I started learning about the stock market from my grandfather at age 12. That is another story, which I tell in the Methodology Essentials course to inspire my students to dream bigger than anyone thinks they can achieve. 

I retired in my late 30s since I had started working at the age of 9 with my first business, and I had plenty of money from investments and the business that I sold.  I wanted to enjoy life since I had started working at such a young age. 

I did all the things that retirees do: travel, learn new things, volunteer work, skiing lessons, ice skating and many other activities. Soon I was very bored. It turned out that retirement was not my thing after all. I needed something more but I wasn’t sure what it was.

During this time, my business and trading partner, Howard and I had many people coming to us asking for help with learning how to trade the stock market. It was the era of the first online brokers. Stock trading and investing was something everyone wanted to learn. We were inundated with people asking for help.

One day, Howard suggested that we do a workshop on how to trade and invest in stocks and options.  My reply was, “Are you nuts?? I’m retired!”

“And you're bored,” he said. “You need something meaningful to do, something that gives you purpose. You’re a great teacher.”

I said, “Everyone knows what I know already. They can read books and go on the internet. No.”

Howard pestered me for over a year and I kept saying no. Finally, one day, to get him to stop, I agreed to  do ONE live workshop. I figured nobody would come or that once we did one, it would be over.

News of our 2-day workshop to be held in a Seattle hotel quickly circulated and reservations filled to more than we could fit in the huge ballroom. Professionals and ordinary people alike flew in to take our workshop. 

We had agreed that we would create a complete comprehensive course that covered every detail of trading and investing in the stock market.

I stood near the door of the crowded room and got cold feet. We had put together a training manual with tests and all of the knowledge I had, along with all of Howard’s resourceful and unique trading calculators for setting up orders, risk management, everything. 

I whispered in his ear as he nudged me to the front of the room to start, “We’re going to have to refund everyone. Look around. There are stock brokers here, Howard. They know this stuff.”

Howard just gave me that “go for it” grin of his and shoved me to the podium. “Just do what you do, Martha,” he said smiling.

I looked out at the eager faces and started my part of the training, going over how to read a stock chart, candlestick charts, market participants and their footprints. About 10 minutes into my presentation, I stopped in wonder. Scanning the room, I saw the intent focus of ALL the attendees. No one moved or spoke or turned away from my face. You could have heard a feather drop to the floor.

Then, it dawned on me.  “You don’t know this stuff, do you?” I asked. All heads shook no. They had never heard what I was teaching before. It was at that moment that I realized Howard and I had found something uniquely special, something purposeful to do. 

The workshop was a huge success. Soon we had people asking for the next workshop. People came from everywhere to attend our workshops in those early days.

Now that we are fully online with our training courses, anyone anywhere in the world can learn our unique approach to trading and investing.  It is my passion and my legacy.  It is the most exciting and rewarding retirement I could ever have.
